Situation

  • IBM Cognos Analytics ran on Linux inside the customer's own environment, and the business relied on it for scheduled reports.
  • The in-house team built reports but didn't have Cognos platform specialists for upgrades, tuning and outages.
  • Failed report schedules or a stopped service were often noticed only when a manager asked where a report was.

Task

  • Keep the Cognos platform available and up to date, without adding headcount.
  • Catch problems before report users do, and fix them inside agreed response times.

Action

  • Took over day-to-day administration of the Cognos servers: services, content store, data source connections and security.
  • Set up monitoring and alerts for the Cognos services, the content store database and disk, memory and CPU on the Linux hosts.
  • Planned and ran fix packs and upgrades in maintenance windows, with backups and a tested rollback.
  • Became the escalation point for failed schedules, slow reports and sign-in issues, with a monthly health report.

Result

  • Managed platform, from installation to day-to-day operation
  • Proactive alerts before users notice a problem
  • 1 team accountable for Cognos uptime
