Moving 25+ live apps across Azure tenants

Situation

  • About 25 customer apps (websites, mobile-app backends and admin panels) ran in one Azure subscription.
  • The subscription ran on credits that were about to run out. When they did, Azure would disable it and every site would go offline.
  • The apps stored about 9,600 file links signed for the old storage, so a plain copy would have broken images and documents.

Task

  • Move servers, databases, about 2 TB of files and every domain to a new subscription in a different Azure tenant.
  • No data loss, minimal downtime and nothing customers would notice.

Action

  • Snapshotted the server disks, copied them across tenants and rebuilt the server in the new subscription.
  • Recreated 6 storage accounts with identical settings and copied every file into them.
  • Re-signed about 9,600 stored file links and repointed every app's configuration to the new storage.
  • Lowered DNS TTLs in advance, switched the domains and tested all 50+ hostnames before and after.

Result

  • 25+ live customer apps moved, with no data lost
  • 29,687 files (about 2 TB) copied and verified
  • 50+ hostnames tested before and after the switch
